Albuterol the Crack for Children

Albuterol

Albuterol

I have to say this is what I consider to be Crack for Children.  Poor lil boo was put on the lovely nebulizer the other day to get his ‘crack’ treatment of Albuterol for his RSV.  This lil guy was out of control.  We did his last treatment around 5pm at the latest and he was zippin’ around the house like a screaming banshee!  Bedtime was the worst part of this evil concoction.  The lil guy would not go to sleep – and he LOVES his sleep!!  The other night I crashed around 10:30pm – visited lil boo at 1:30am (hyper madness) and then woke up for work at 4:30am — I thought the middle of the night rendezvous were finished after the infant stages??  This stuff is vicious!  Check out some of the stats of this crack crap (which helped but still):

  • Albuterol is a bronchodilator that relaxes muscles in the airways and increases air flow to the lungs.
  • Albuterol is used to treat or prevent bronchospasm in people with reversible obstructive airway disease. Albuterol is also used to prevent exercise-induced bronchospasm.

albuterol side effects

Stop using Albuterol and get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Call your doctor at once if you have a serious side effect such as:

  • bronchospasm (wheezing, chest tightness, trouble breathing), especially after starting a new canister of this medicine;
  • chest pain and fast, pounding, or uneven heart beats;
  • tremor, nervousness; or
  • dangerously high blood pressure (severe headache, blurred vision, buzzing in your ears, anxiety, confusion, chest pain, shortness of breath, uneven heartbeats, seizure).

Less serious side effects may include:

  • headache, dizziness, nervousness;
  • sleep problems (insomnia);
  • cough, hoarseness, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose;
  • dry mouth and throat;
  • muscle pain; or
  • diarrhea.

Seriously, are you looking at this list?  Just a minor list mind you.  I have a severe case of the WTF’s?!!  You are supposed to use this medicine to help clear your airways since you are having problems breathing.  Yet look under the first four items, don’t you already have these issues????  Now taking this drug can cause side effects of which the same effects that are happening to you before you even take it??  Just a little confused.  Now for the latter portion of the list….item two (insomnia) DUH!!!  Show me a nervous, anxiety ridden, child wheezing for a breath of air….not rocket science.  This is some messed up crap, that well works in our case, unfortunately.  Luckily, we only had to deal with a few treatments.

Mr. Humble Pie

January 20th, 2009

It is amazing how one will act when they do not feel well.  Especially Mr. Humble Pie himself.  Now mind you, he is not always humble during his ‘not so feeling well days’.  Though the times he is humble are just absolutely adorable!!  He will cuddle up with you and pretty much just latch on until he’s decided that is enough.  Used and abused is the best way to put it.

Over the last few days (as of last Friday) he started a dry cough.  By Sunday, it was a deep lung based cough.  The mrs. took the lil guy to the doctor.  A cool thing we have here in the valley of the surface of the burning sun of death is a place called Good Night Pediatrics.  It is open from 5pm to 5am every night including holidays.  This beats going to the ER!  It wound up being that the lil guy had RSV.  This is not good by any means!  Off to the nebulizer is was with medicine to clear out this crud.  This is where the Mr. Humble Pie has left the building and chaos ship docks.  Unleash the pirates of tormenting carnage!  Lil boo hates this machine with passion!  He has hated the nebulizer in the past (he’s been ill like this before), it just destroys you inside to watch him freak out with this thing.  It works though!

One extreme to the other, that’s how toddlers are, at least that is what I have learned.  I wasn’t really joking around when I posted bipolar inside.  As much as I do joke around to lighten up the trials and tribulations of parenthood, it is an awesome feeling when those little one’s latch on to you for their own comfort as the chaos ship knocks them around inside.  It is probably even a better feeling for them!  I’m just glad that the mrs. and I are here for this wild and crazy ride with lil boo.
