Proof I Ate Fish Eggs

At first glance, yes they are fish eggs.

With a second glance, perhaps fish bait.

The third glance more commonly known as caviar, roe (Salmon Fish Eggs), ikura – イクラ.

Yes, yours truly tasted and enjoyed two (2) of these delightfully decadent treats for the first time in his life.

I am always open to trying out new and unique foods.  Hence, this opportunity arrived while at a lunch with a good friend of mine, the curiosity bug bit my brain and I had to have at least one.  If not, just for the photo op alone as proof! (Reason for the second order, as the photo op failed on first take.)

One suggestion, do not try to eat just a little nibble….you will never want one of these again.  Like trying to eat just one egg, forget it!  One shot wonder will do it!  Something happens when you bite into it, a surge of flavors transform, you put all your preconceptions of the ‘fish egg’ behind you, leaving you wanting more.

Here’s what I did for the second photo op, I took the ginger and wrapped it around the seaweed and dabbed some wasabi over the top.  Mind you the photos below, look like I am eating something absolutely nasty….the ginger fell off the sides…you’ll see.

See, I warned you!  It just does not look right.

Would I eat this again?  You better believe it!

If you were wondering the rest of the meal included tuna, salmon, octopus, eel, squid, sweet shrimp, amongst other very tasty delights!  Followed of course by two bottles of Ichiban beer.  Now if I could only tag along with my buddy on his next trip to Tokyo!!

If not there is always Morimoto’s in Philadelphia (3 hour flight versus 14 hours).

Enjoy!

Welcome to the YOB Years!  Where all you need is a BIG Hug!
