An Apple A Day – Do Not Think So

Added to last weeks issues, we had our follow up visit to the Allergist Doctor for lil boo.  We are completely astounded at the results.  I just can not believe what this poor little fellow is allergic to.  Let’s back up the bus for just a moment.

A few weeks back we took lil boo to the allergist for his second set of testing.  The first round was at 18 months old.  In which, we found out he was allergic to a few food items.  Which made sense, since he was breaking out in hives from milk/dairy and had eczema.  The problem was, he was only 18 months old and the doctor would not let us do blood work due to his age and suggested we wait.  Especially, since most allergies seem to disappear with age.

Catching up to 3 years old now and boy have things gone south for the winter and summer for this lil guy.  The biggest scare was about three months back when he had a severe reaction to a piece of cheese I gave him.  We rushed him over to the doctors office (across the street lucky us) to figure out what had happened.  It was a reaction to the cheese.  On top of that we had noticed a reaction to soy milk around the same time.  Insert immediate Epi-Pen prescription into Bookins household.  Now time to schedule the visit to a wonderful Allergist, Dr. Shimamoto.  Talk about a wait time to get in, but well worth the wait.  I would highly recommend him to anyone.

Upon our first visit with Dr. Shimamoto we discussed all of lil boo’s background, traits, habits, etc etc.  Then came the unfortunate allergy pad application of 40 some odd things you may be most commonly allergic to on lil boo’s back.  This covers food, environment, animals and more (anyone that has had this, knows what it’s about).  The application is supposed to remain on one’s back for 20 minutes to see the significant results.  We waited literally two minutes and our poor lil boo was in such an itchy hell, he blew up like (trying to be politically correct here) —– sorry for the delay —– remember Veruca Salt from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory?!?!  There how’s that for being politically correct, that was lil boo’s back.  I was walking down the hallway holding him, trying to get him to calm down, while pinning his arms under mine to stop the scratching, when the Doc saw his back while in mid sentence rushed him into the room to get cleaned up wiped down and drugged up to cure the swelling.  Talk about having a positive outcome from testing, holy crap!  You name it lil boo is allergic to it.  Now for a more specific test, the blood work.

This was a horrific experience for our lil guy.  He had never had blood drawn from him before.  The nurses at the blood place (not sure what it is exactly called) did a wonderful job with this lil guy.  It took me, the mrs., and two nurses to to hold him down just to get a vile of blood for testing.  Talk about a traumatized lil guy!  We felt very bad for him and the look in his eyes proved he was not a happy camper with us at all.

Now for the wait….

Last week we met up with the Doc to find out what exactly lil boo was allergic to.  It is just unreal!  In hindsight makes complete sense.

Have you ever heard of someone being allergic to Apples? Carrots? Potato’s? Corn? Strawberries?  These are some of the mild ones mind you.  Remember though lil boo does not eat meat (of which he is not allergic to), he eats fruits and veggies – he loves apples and strawberries!  I couldn’t believe this once we started going down the list.

The major allergies consisted of Egg White, Wheat, Milk, Soy, Oats, and worst of all Nuts.  This does not include all the environmental and animal allergies.

The good news is he will more than likely grow out of most of these allergies, except the nut one.  The bad news is, our household now shops entirely at Whole Paycheck errr Foods!  Whatever it takes for our lil guy!

How this all makes sense, we now understand why lil boo would tell us, “mommy – daddy my tummy hurts”, why his bowels were never really solid, what has caused a large amount of his eczema an internal reaction to the allergy.  Everything has come full circle.

Since last weeks visit to the Doc, we have taken lil boo off of everything he his allergic to, his diet has change – not that it was bad to begin with.  It now just does not contain anything he is allergic to and you know what……his eczema has disappeared, no more tummy aches and he seems to be a happy lil boy (yeah right wait for tomorrow’s post on Mr Thiswards, Mr Thatwards in Mayhem of Madness – sheesh the three’s argh!!!)

All is well in the Bookins household, we know what our lil guy will have a reaction to, we have Epi-Pens in supply, lil guy takes his allergy meds day and night to ward off the environmental crap and life goes on…..by the way….do you have any idea all the stuff they make out of rice these days????  You would be surprised…..we picked up Rice Burgers!

To all the doctor’s that used to say, “An Apple a Day – Keeps the Doctor Away!”  BITE ME! <–I know real mature, I had to.

Enjoy!

Welcome to the YOB Years!  Where all you need is a BIG Hug!

  1. I’ve been waiting all weekend to read! What an ordeal for the little guy. I can sympathize since I have a 3 and a 4 yr old. We’ve gone through nothing as extreme as that. I can relate however to the medications. My 3 yr old has reactive airway disease, brought on by environmental allergies. We’ve had her on albuterol since 10 months… breathing treatments…. singulair… benedryl… it’s gotten much better since then. But once winter hits… so do the regular treatments.

Anywho… Little Boo will be receiving extra prayers tonight. I shared part of your story with my girls. Whenever I run across a blog with a story of children and circumstances new to us… I share it with them.

Thank goodness the fruit allergies are the minor ones. Does that mean he can enjoy fruit now and then? I’m assuming those are the allergies he will most likely grow out of. My 4 yr would would get a bad case of hives (or a swollen rash) when she would eat strawberries between ages 1 and 2… shes’s fine with them now (almost 5).

My comment is turning into a novel… but I commend you and the mrs. for your commitment to finding the source of your little one’s allergies. Way to get thru that Dr. Visit Boo!

I follow you on twitter and just happened to read this. I wrote an article in my family health column about how fruit and veggie allergies are soaring surpassing peanut allergies… I think you will find it informative. Good Luck

OMG! I will never complain about my sons allergies again. We had to get his blood tested when he was 14 months old after he puffed up like the the Michelin Man after he spilled my peanut butter on his skin. Thank god it didn’t make it into his mouth, because every place it touched puffed up like giant marshmallows. He has the basics and a few others, but geez! Bless you man!
